Choosing the Right Glass Bottles: Size, Shape, Glass Color, and Closure
Choosing the right glass bottle depends on more than just the desired capacity. The bottle’s shape, glass color, mouth, and closure must be suitable for the beverage, the filling process, and its subsequent use. For beverage manufacturers and bottlers, availability, required quantities, and a reliable supply also play an important role.
This guide explains what criteria you should consider when choosing a glass bottle and how to find the right solution step by step.

Which glass bottle is the right one?
The right glass bottle is determined by the interplay of several requirements. The starting point is, first and foremost, the beverage to be bottled. A beer bottle, for example, has different requirements in terms of shape, closure, and light protection than a wine, juice, or water bottle.
When making a selection, the following points in particular should be considered:
- Beverage and Product Characteristics
- Desired filling volume
- Bottle Shape and Dimensions
- Glass color
- Mouth and Closure
- Requirements for the Filling Line
- Labeling and Other Features
- Packaging, Transportation, and Logistics
- Required quantities and availability
It is therefore advisable not to choose a glass bottle based solely on its appearance. What matters most is that the product, bottle, cap, and filling process work well together.
1. Determine the fill volume and bottle size
The first step is to determine how much of the beverage should be bottled. Depending on the beverage and the distribution strategy, different fill volumes may be appropriate.
In addition to the actual fill volume, the bottle’s external dimensions are also important. For example, the height and diameter affect processing on the filling line, labeling, and subsequent packaging in cartons or beverage crates.
Even when they have the same capacity, glass bottles can therefore vary significantly in shape and dimensions.
Practical Tip: When switching to a different type of bottle, don’t just compare the filling volume. You should also check the dimensions, the mouth, the closure, and the requirements of the existing filling equipment.
2. Choose the right bottle shape
The bottle’s shape serves both functional and aesthetic purposes. It influences how the product is perceived, but can also affect filling, labeling, packaging, and transportation.
Certain types of bottles have become standard in many beverage categories. For beer, for example, longneck, NRW, and Steinie bottles are among the most common shapes. For wine, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Schlegel bottles, among others, are widely used.
An established standard shape can offer advantages in terms of procurement and availability. A more customized bottle shape, on the other hand, can contribute more significantly to a product’s differentiation.
Beverage manufacturers should therefore always weigh the relative importance of design, technical compatibility, availability, and cost-effectiveness for each product.
3. Amber glass, clear glass, or green glass?
The color of the glass doesn’t just determine the appearance of a beverage container; it can also play a role in protecting the contents.
Amber glass
Amber glass offers a comparatively high level of protection against light and is therefore often used for light-sensitive beverages. Beer bottles are a well-known example of this application.
Clear glass
Clear glass provides a largely unobstructed view of the bottled beverage. This allows the product’s color to become part of the packaging design.
However, when dealing with light-sensitive products, it is important to keep in mind that transparent glass offers less protection from light than tinted glass.
Green Glass
Green glass combines a distinctive appearance with a certain degree of light protection and is particularly common in various types of wine and beverage packaging.
The color of the glass should therefore not be chosen solely for aesthetic reasons. Product characteristics, the desired presentation, and the required protection from light should be considered together.
4. Match the opening and the closure
A bottle and its cap form a single unit. The specific neck of the glass bottle is crucial, because not every cap can be used with every bottle.
Depending on the application, the following are possible, for example:
- Crown caps
- Screw-on caps
- Clip Closures
- Additional application-specific closure systems
It is not only mechanical compatibility that must be taken into account. The beverage, the filling process, and the existing capping technology also play a role.
Anyone replacing an existing bottle type should therefore take special care to ensure that the alternative bottle is compatible with the existing production line in terms of the bottle opening and cap.
5. Check the filling system and technical requirements
For a commercial bottler, a visually suitable glass bottle is a viable solution only if it can be reliably integrated into the production process.
Depending on the specific system, the following characteristics, among others, may be relevant:
Bottle height and diameter: The dimensions must be within the system’s technical capabilities.
Mouth: It must be compatible with the intended closure system and sealing method.
Bottle shape: The contour and geometry can affect transport, guidance, and handling within the system.
Labeling surface: The shape and available surface area must be suitable for the intended labeling process.
Packaging: The subsequent packaging in crates, boxes, or other shipping containers should also be taken into account.
Therefore, especially when switching to a new type of bottle, it is advisable to verify technical compatibility before placing a large order.
6. Consider whether items are single-use or reusable
The planned packaging and distribution system also influences the choice of a glass bottle.
In a reusable system, factors such as return, cleaning, refilling, and compatibility with existing beverage crates and logistics systems play a role in addition to the bottle itself.
With single-use solutions, however, other requirements regarding bottle design, packaging, and distribution may take precedence.
Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to whether single-use or reusable packaging is the right solution. The key factors are the specific product, the distribution strategy, and existing operational processes.
7. Plan for availability and procurement early on
A bottle that is technically and aesthetically ideal is a practical solution only if it can be procured in the required quantity and at the necessary time.
That is why nutrition should be taken into account as early as the bottle-selection stage.
Especially in the case of recurring fill runs, it may be advisable to clarify the following early on:
- What quantities are needed on a regular basis?
- Are there seasonal spikes in demand?
- What delivery times need to be taken into account?
- What alternative types of bottles could generally be used?
- Which bottle features are mandatory, and where is there flexibility?
Identifying potential alternatives early on can help ensure that we remain able to act when availability changes.
KP Glas assists commercial beverage manufacturers and bottlers in selecting and sourcing suitable glass bottles, as well as in evaluating potential alternatives.
Checklist: Choosing Glass Bottles
Before deciding on a glass bottle, you should at least answer the following questions:
1. Which beverage is being bottled?
Determine product characteristics and packaging requirements.
2. What is the required filling volume?
Specify the desired container size.
3. What is the best bottle shape?
Take into account design, handling, labeling, and packaging.
4. What color glass is needed?
Weigh the aesthetics against the necessary UV protection.
5. What type of mouthpiece and cap are required?
Ensure compatibility with the product and the closure technology.
6. Is the bottle compatible with the existing filling line?
Check the dimensions and technical requirements.
7. Will the required quantity be available at the desired time?
Take demand, delivery times, and possible alternatives into account early on.
This transforms the mere selection of products into a holistic view of the beverage, packaging, production, and supply.
